When decorating the children’s rooms there are many considerations – what function should the room provide – both bedroom, playroom and study room? A quick consideration of which colors and decorations will create the warm atmosphere, also which furniture are suitable for your child’s age. At the same time, it’s important to adapt to the personality your child has and what currently is popular, fun and safe? The mattress is perhaps not the most obvious thing to deal with – but here you get som very good advice along the way:

Mattress foam

There are several types of mattress foams that are approved for bed mattresses.Cold foam is known for its firmness and high comfort. The mattress therefore provides good support while helping to maintain a comfortable temperature throughout the night. At Hoppekids you will find cold foam mattresses in accordance with STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® (64406 OETI). Waterlily® is awarded the Nordic Ecolabel and is among the most environmentally friendly mattress foams on the market.  Emissions are low during use of the a mattress, as well as when the product is being disposed of. Surplus material from production can be broken down and transformed into new raw material. The mattress contains no brominated flame retardants or other types of flame retardants. The eco-friendly Waterlily® foam core is made of high-elastic polyurethane foam (PUR) for a resilient, soft and comfortable comfort – even better than cold foam mattresses. At Hoppekids, Waterlily® is part of the ECO mattress range.  Celsius health foam is a Nordic Ecolabelled mattress foam with particularly soft and pressure-relieving properties. This is a viscoelastic material. By affecting the body’s heat, the foam reacts by shaping according to the body in order to provide support – memory foam. At Hoppekids you will find the ECO Luxury Mattress, which has a mattress core in Waterlily with 3 cm Celsius health foam as top layer.

Mattress Covers

One of the allergies some children may develop, is to house dust mites. Dust mites can found in every home and everywhere in the home. Both on the floor, in furniture and in beds. Those who develop allergies, are not allergic to the mites themselves, but to small dust particles that are much smaller than the mites and contains mite allergen in the form of bits of dead mites or from the mites’ stools.(Source:https://videnskab.dk/miljo-naturvidenskab/husstovmider-bor-ikke-i-madrassen)The problem occurs if we inhalde these dust particles. Dust particles are heavy and stay suspended for a short time and those who land on the carpet will normally not bother your child. On the other hand, if your child is lying on a mattress for a whole night, a larger amount is inhaled. Also, pollen from the outside can settle into the mattress cover. Thus, the choice of mattress and washable mattress cover can be included in preventing allergy symptoms.

Bamboofibers in fabric:

Bamboo is energy efficient and among the fastest growing plants in the world. It is tough and does not need any pesticides in production. Bamboo can grow in many places and releases oxygen. Bamboo fibers are light, breathable and have a silky touch. Bamboo fibers have a hollow cell structure and can therefore absorb 50% more moisture from a night’s sleep than cotton. Natural antibacterial elements in the bamboo fibers keep it germ-free even after many times washing.Considering that mattresses should contribute to the child’s healthy sleep, Hoppekids introduces the ECO mattress cover, where mattress cover carries the Nordic Ecolabel. On the outer side it consists of soft bamboo fibers with felted thermowool. This conducts moisture and heat away from the body. The mattress cover is not bleached and can be washed at 60° C

Vertical ventilation holes or horizontal channels?

By designing the mattress with either vertical holes or horizontal channels, both comfort zones and especially an optimal air flow for temperature and humidity control is ensured. Waterlily® Foam is also open-celled and breathable, and therefore has excellent moist-transporting properties

How to take care of your mattress:

  • Healthy sleeping conditions needs good ventilation. This also applies to ECO mattresses.
  • Bedspreads and duvets prevent moisture from evaporating from the mattress, so await to put bedspreads and duvets over the mattress. Give the mattress air so the sweat can evaporate.
  • The ECO mattress benefits from being vacuumed, for example when changing bedding. This is a great way to remove both dust mites, dust and loose fibers.
  • Rotating the mattress regularly prevents the mattress to sag due to wear. Rotate at least once every 3 months, for instance  head/ foot ends.
  • Allowing air under the mattress keeps the mattress ventilated. A bed base with slats allows air, as opposed to solid wood or masonite base, which on the long run can cause humitidy problems. Check the bed area for dark areas and signs of mold or skim- both under the mattress as well as tha actual bed itself.
  • Foam has a unique odor which can be distinct immediately after unpacking. The odor fades quickly and is completely harmless. Increased ventilation will make the odor dissipate faster.
  • If your new mattress has been roll packaged, it is recommended to let the mattress settle for 48 hours before using it.
